How do I restore an enterprise project from a previous backup of the Project Server database?

Microsoft Project Server Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): Overview

Microsoft Project Server Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): Details

Resolution

If the original project still exists in the Project Server database, you can use the Restore Single Project Tool, available for free download at:

Download the Restore Single Project Tool

If you accidentally deleted the original project from the Project Server database, then one of your organization’s SQL Server DBA’s must perform the following steps:

1. Create a new blank SQL Server database

2. Restore a recent backup of the Project Server database into the new blank database

3. Give access rights to the restored Project Server database to the Project Server administrator

The above steps will produce a copy of the Project Server database, containing the original project that was deleted from the production Project Server database. To restore the original project back into the production Project Server database, the Project Server administrator should perform these steps:

1. Launch Microsoft Project Professional and log into Project Server with administrator permissions

2. Click File > Open > Open from File

3. Click the ODBC button at the bottom of the dialog

4. Create a Machine Data Source that attaches to the restored Project Server database

5. Click the Finish button and then click the OK button

6. Select the new Machine Data Source and click the OK button

7. In the Import Wizard dialog, select the project that was accidentally deleted and click the Finish button

8. Click File - Save As, then click the Save as File button

9. Save the project as an .mpp file

10. Close the .mpp file

11. Click Tools - Enterprise Options - Import Project to Enterprise

12. Import the .mpp file saved in step #9 above
