What methods for tracking progress are available in Project Server?

Microsoft Project Server Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): Overview

Microsoft Project Server Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): Details

Resolution for Project Server 2002 and 2003

Project Server 2002 and 2003 support three default methods of tracking progress. You have the option to lock down the default method of tracking for all projects or at the server or to allow each project manager to select the tracking method on a project-by-project basis. In summary, the following describes the affect of selecting each tracking method:

1.  Percent of Work Complete -- When you select this method, each team member sees the task sheet on the left side and a Gantt Chart on the right side of the View My Tasks page in Project Web Access. Team members can only enter actual progress in the % Work Complete field and the Remaining Work field in the task sheet on the left side of the page. If the team member displays the Timesheet on the right side of the page, all cells in the timesheet grid are locked so that users cannot enter progress in the Timesheet grid.

2.  Actual Work Done and Work Remaining -- When you select this method, each team member sees the task sheet on the left side and a Gantt Chart on the right side of the View My Tasks page in Project Web Access. Team members can only enter actual progress in the Actual Work field and the Remaining Work field in the task sheet on the left side of the page. If the team member displays the Timesheet on the right side of the page, all cells in the timesheet grid are locked so that users cannot enter progress in the Timesheet grid.

3.  Hours of Work Done Per Day or Per Week -- When you select this method, each team member sees the task sheet on the left side and a Timesheet on the right side of the View My Tasks page in Project Web Access. Team members can enter actual progress values in the Actual Work cells of the Timesheet grid on the right side of the page, and can enter a value in the Remaining Work field in the task sheet on the left side of the page.

Resolution for Project Server 2007

Project Server 2007  supports three methods of tracking progress. You have the option to lock down the default method of tracking for all projects or at the server or to allow each project manager to select the tracking method on a project-by-project basis. In summary, the following describes the affect of selecting each tracking method:

1.  Percent of Work Complete -- When you select this method, team members can enter a % Work Complete value in the Progress field for any task in the My Tasks page.  If you add the Remaining Work column to the My Assignments view, team members can also adjust the Remaining Work value for any task.

2.  Actual Work Done and Work Remaining -- When you select this method, team members can enter an Actual Work value (entered in Hours) in the Progress field for any task in the My Tasks page.  If you add the Remaining Work column to the My Assignments view, team members can also adjust the Remaining Work value for any task.

3.  Hours of Work Done Per Period -- When you select this method, team members can enter Actual Work on a daily or weekly basis on any task in the timesheet grid in the My Tasks page.  If you add the Remaining Work column to the My Assignments view, team members can also adjust the Remaining Work value for any task.

WARNING:  The timesheet grid does not display on the My Tasks page by default when you select the Hours of Work Done Per Period method of tracking progress. To display the timesheet grid, refer to the following FAQ:
